Theatinerkirche - Bavaria's oldest italian barock church
Henriette Adelaide of Savoy was so happy to have finally given birth to an impatiently awaited heir (Max Emanuel) that she founded the church in 1620. Barelli and Zucalli, two Italian masters, built Munich's massive barock church which received its rococo facade a century later (François Cuvillé the Elder). This type of architecture influenced many other churches built in southern Bavaria. Location: Odeonsplatz. (7/9/95)

Alter Sankt Peter - a touch of gothic architecture
Among Munich's oldest churches and certainly one that suffered numerous catastrophies, fire (1327), lightning (1607) leading to the new tower giving its name, World War II. Even before the city was founded, a chapel was erected on a site called "Petersbergl" (Peter's hill) followed by a roman basilica toward the beginning of the 11th century. After being completely rebuilt it still displays its gothic character of the 14th century. Climbing up its 300 stairs is definetly worth the effort, a beautiful view of Munich awaits you. Try to climb up 10 minutes prior to noon to enjoy the ear shattering sound of its bell tower. Location:Rindermarkt, Marienplatz. (7/9/95)

The European Patent Office - Steel & and Glass
Jump on the other side of the street from the Deutsches Museum and take a look at this very modern and massive building that houses a questionable admnistration (patenting gene engineering discoveries). (7/9/95)

Jugendstil: Munich's art nouveau
It turned out to be Munich's magazine "Jugend" (youth) that gave its name to a new style. The city and especially "Schwabing" house quite a few gems from that era. Architects Helgib and Haiger created this little marvel on 22 Ainmillerstraße around the turn of the century, "a precious stone on a woman's dress". Colors, rhythm and golden masks reveal a venetian influence.
