FREILICHTMUSEUM
Original Bavarian
country and farm houses share 60 acres
-
When do you actually get a chance to visit an original bavarian
farm house inside and out ? And not only one but many original ones
some of which were built over 200 years ago. Forty original houses of
varying size and age were meticulously disasssembled and each piece
marked to be authentically rebuilt at the Freilichtmuseum (equivalent
of open air museum). Overlooking the beautiful valleys of the alps and
the village of Schlehdorf these impressive houses and mansions enjoy
their second lives. Not only architects and professionals will be
impressed by the woodwork and ingenious attention to detail and
functionality. The museum is still growing at a rapid pace. Try visiting
on a weekend when the local population comes in traditional costume
to show their children how the grandparents where living and working.
Taken away by nature's
scents and alpine surroundings
Your eyes will
catch balconies overflowing with fire engine red geraniums and window
shutters with hearts cut out. Inside, the furniture is authentic and
sometimes you feel embarrassed to look at all the personal belongings.
Anytime you could be surprised by the families coming back from the
fields. Spinning wheels and hemp coams, water driven saw mills and
sharpening stones manufacturing. potery forming and firing can be
witnessed live. Everything is kept in working condition and the trades
are demonstrated by professional craftsmen.
A roof, a bell and a cross
This 19th century chapel awaits its worshippers in peace and
quiet. Certainly a place to worship in a serene way, far away from
300 feet high gothic cathedrals erected to impress and subdue. Should
you wish to hold your wedding ceremony here (definetely possible), you
may want to count seats ahead of time, this is not "Notre Dame".
