Opera

Munich citizens enjoy a world reknown neo-classical opera house, the National Theatre, entirely rebuilt after being completely destroyed after WW II at extreme cost covered mostly by public fund raisers. Its bacteria infested hydraulic stage lifts were the source of just a few scandals and serious uproar among opera lovers from all lands and countries who saw several seasons drop out. Sawallish, who found his new home in Philadelphia, was replaced 2 years ago by Peter Jonas and is bringing along a fresh breeze from London. Nevertheless, Munich's opera saw several original premieres put on stage such as Wolfi's "la finta Giardineira" and "Idominea". King Ludwig's attraction for Wagner could be held responsible for bringing such masterpieces as "Tristan und Isolde" and "Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg". The list can easily be expanded with Richard Strauss, Reger and Orff. In addition to the National Theatre's regular fare, a special Opera festival takes place in July and ballet aficionados will not want to miss the May festival. It can be heard on the grapevine that wealthy opera goers hire student's from Munich's helpout service to stand in line for tickets, that's how difficult things can get to snatch a few goos seats to top of the line performances.
