Gardens

In the english garden

-
Chinesischer Turm (chinese tower)
-
Probably the best known and "wildest" beer garden in
Munich. Locals, foreigners, young and old folks from all walks of life
meet in a very casual fashion sharing the same tables and benches to
enjoy foods and the brew. Especially after business hours -
daylight lasts till 10pm - the chinese tower with its approx.7000
seatings comes to life. Some say that close 250 thousand gallons of brew
are consumed in one season (usually June thru October). You may be
surprised to see a patrol of NYC like looking street cops, they are
privately hired security of doubtful reputation. Should you have an
urgent question to ask in your native tongue, ask any one of the
Irish helpers in green fluorescent t-shirts, they'll be more than
happy to answer in their native tongue. You should not miss a very
beautiful merry-go-round, originally built at the beginning of the
century and conserved to perfection. Kid's will love you for dropping
them off at the newly added fun space.
Address: Englischer Garten 5
Open from 11am to midnight
Beer:
Löwenbräu
Seehaus (The house by the lake)
- Did you ever dream of rowing your sweetheart casually through
an english garden where King Ludwig's fetish white swans come to say
hello and hundreds of ducks (before the hunting season starts)
populate mysterious looking islands ? You are at the right spot. After
working up a healthy sweat (we assume you preferred to show off how
fast you can row) turn into the Seehaus right next door to the boat
rentals. It is the young urban professionals' favorite beer garden, they
can dash right off the "mittlerer ring" (one of Munich's major arteries)
in their bmw convertibles and grab a quick beer between dates. Being
close to the lake can be quite refreshing, you might even witness
a few wild bathers stepping off their benches and into the shallow waters
to cool off.
Address: Kleihesselohe 2
Open from 10am to midnight
Beer:
Paulaner
Aumeister (Master of the meadow)
- You decided to walk or borrow a bicycle and are cruising
through the north and more natural growing part of the english
garden. Be ready to stop anytime and watch beautiful deer grazing or
try to follow rabbits rushing throuh the underbrush. You can't miss
it, at the northern border of the garden lies the Aumeister, a quiet
and "gut bürgerlicher" (a good commoner's) beer garden the whole
family can enjoy. Most beer gardens offer kid fun spaces to attract
parents so everyone can enjoy being out in the green. The Aumeister
restaurant is also an excellent address to taste some of the bavarian
native dishes.
Address: Sondermeierstrasse
Open from 9am to 11pm
Beer:
Hofbräuhaus

Under chestnut trees or hidden in inside courts

-
A true bastion for serious party goers. Don't be sad to have missed
the Oktoberfest, it's just like it at a smaller scale location
wise but not fun wise. You'll have a hard time finding Münchners
but some will accompany their out-of-town guests to spend an evening
at a real tourist institution. Located at the heart of old Munich and
along the "Munich-in-one-day" trail the neo-renaissance building can
hardly be missed. But for great sing alongs in all the world's
languages and serious "shunkeln" (arm in arm whole bench rocking) it's
definetely the place to try.
Address: Platzl 97
Open from 10am to 11:30pm
Beer: (need we mention?)
Hofbräuhaus
... and more to come soon ...
