Tegernsee Hiking Trip

The mountains surrounding the "Tegernsee" - one of Bavaria's most beautiful lakes - are located about 30 car minutes away South-East of Munich. They offer many hiking opportunities for all enjoyment and endurance levels. Follow us on a refreshing and inspiring hike along a few trails on one of the last sunny weekends in fall, just before the snow started falling.

After waiting for the Münchner early bird crowds to clear the Autobahn Salzburg we took off around 10am. What luck we had, the wintertime had come dangerously close, but what probably was one of the last sunny Sundays of the year, we headed for Rottach Egern located next to the Tegernsee in a region called the Sutten. We found the trees in their most colorful dresses, unbelievable shades of golden browns to rusty reds.

After parking the car at the trail head and putting on our hiking boots we started our way up the hill. It did not take long for the body to warm up to a comfortable temperature and to get into the rhythm of deep and heathful breathing. A strong motivating factor for the somewhat strenuous uphill hike is the well known restaurant Saringer, famous for excellent brews and home grown ducks (in very limited quantites - it is best to come early or order in advance).

After hiking through the shady tree lined trails the sky opens and we reach the higher pastures. An overwhelming panorama opens in front of us, we are just a bit blinded by fog diffused light. The smooth mountain ranges blend seamlessly in with the tree tops.

Civilization surprises us here and there, the ski resorts closest to Munich can't be far. Just on the other side lies the Spitzing area, very popular for us living in Munich when in need of a quick ski outing. Most ski lifts operate all year long and are enjoyed by many who wish to indulge in magnificent apline views and high meadows without hour long walks along sometimes steep trails.

It took us about 75 minutes of sometimes steep hiking to reach our goal at the end of the trail, the famous Salinger restaurant. Many hikers have set up camp on nearby benches to absorb the last rays of the moderately warming sun.

While we are still enjoying sunny skies we can see how the fog comes slowly creeping up the hills. It did not take long for it to reach us too, time to start the downhill walk following a crystal clear mountain stream.
